A sound machine is a fantastic tool to have on your side to help your baby sleep. These little wonders are designed with sounds that are specifically meant for babies and children such as gentle lullaby’s, heart beats, rain falling or simple white noise.

What to Look for In a Sound Machine for Your Baby

The main purpose of a sound machine is of course to have built in sounds that your child will find soothing enough to fall asleep to. As a parent, there are a few other factors to consider as well.

  • Too many buttons and features can be a curse or a blessing depending on how you look at it. No matter how many features the sound machine has, if it’s not easy to use, to quickly turn on when baby begins fussing, it’s not worth getting.
  • Built in night lights make it easy for you to change settings on the sound machine without having to turn the lights on to see the button.
  • Speaking of buttons, if they have back lights on them to show you the way, all the better.
  • Ability to plug your iPod or other MP3 players (we happen to be an Apple family) into it to play your own special music for your baby.
  • You may prefer to let your sound machine play all night for your baby, however, if all night is not something you desire, look for a sound machine with a timer feature to turn off after a certain amount of time.
  • Your chosen sound machine should have a good variety of sounds to play. Look for sound machines with white noise, sounds from nature like rain drops or river rushing and even lullaby’s.

Graco Sweet Slumber Sound MachineCheck out the list below for my top 5 list of baby sleep sound machines.

#1 – Graco Sweet Slumber Sound Machine –  With the high functionality and low price, this is my #1 choice for sound machines. There is a selection of white noise, nature sounds and lullaby’s but for the iPod users, you can play your music right through this. It also has a nice soft glowing night light built in and has a timer feature for automatic shutoff for after baby goes to sleep.

#2 – The First Years Sounds For Silence Nursery Sound Machine – The sounds of silence baby sound machine is another great choice for your baby. This sound machine includes a soft glowing nightlight that isn’t too bright for baby, but does allow for mom or dad to come in and change settings. It also includes an option for continuous sound as well as a 60 minute timer. Again, one of our favorite features is that this sound machine has an adapter to connect your MP3 player, letting you play your child’s favorite music.

#3 – myBaby Soundspa Lullaby Sound Machine and Projector – If you think your baby might enjoy some visual imagery while she falls asleep, the Soundspa Sound Machine is a great choice. It includes three soothing sounds including a heartbeat, rain and the ocean as well as three lullaby’s: “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”, “Rock-A-By-Baby” and Brahms’ “Cradle Song” to help baby fall asleep. The projector option includes three image disks that you can project the image onto the ceiling or wall and can be turned off it keeps baby awake. This sound machine also has a built in timer option that can be set to 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes.

#4 – DEX Products Sound Sleeper SS-01 – This sound machine includes a high quality speaker with a volume adjustment option, an on/off or 60 minute timer, random play mode and can even be used to create layered sound combinations for your baby. There isn’t an MP3 player option but with the ability to create your own sounds for baby, this is a great little machine to have around.

#5 – Cloud B Sleep Sheep On The Go Travel Sound Machine – This adorable little sheep is fairly limited on features but I wanted to include it because it makes for a great travel sound machine. It’s also something from home which can make your baby feel more comfortable when away from the comfort of his or her own bed. This does run on batteries so make sure to have plenty on backup. It also have two sleep timer options as well as a push button option to select the sounds. You can also adjust the volume which is nice. I’d definitely keep this one around as a second sound machine option or just for travel.
