If you’ve read my article on the low down of mattress off-gassing, and you’ve decided to go with an organic crib mattress, you might be wondering where the best place is to start in picking the one for your baby. I went through this research and buying process myself about a year ago, right before my daughter was born so I’ve definitely got a few opinions on which model of mattress to purchase.

I’ll give you fair warning, the products I will be talking about are all Naturepedic products which can get expensive if you become a bit of a fan like I have. Out of all the mattresses and other sleep products that I’ve researched this was in my opinion the absolute best brand to buy and they have you covered for practically any type of bedding situation. You can go as simple as making a one time purchase of a basic organic crib mattress, but I’m going to show you some other options as well so that you can give your baby the best for anywhere he or she might sleep.

Here is the “Best” and my own personal purchase decisions for my daughter.

Best Organic Baby Crib Mattress

When I first started looking at organic mattresses I was overwhelmed by the options. To be honest, they all looked the same to me except the price tag. I knew I wanted organic but beyond that I was completely clueless. I did a lot of research online but then I want into a local baby store and talked to a sales associate about all the different options and here is my list of things I came up with that would need to be included in any mattress I purchased.

What to Look for in an Organic Crib Mattress

  • Absolutely had to be 100% waterproof. I wanted something that was easy to clean, by simply wiping it down with a damp cloth. I didn’t want to mess with mattress covers, although I was ok with a flat pad to lay on top that I could easily remove to wash.
  • I wanted something lightweight. Since I tend to do the laundry and that includes changing sheets, I didn’t want a heavy and bulky mattress that I couldn’t easily swap out sheets.
  • I liked the idea of the dual firmness. The sales associate at the baby store talked to me a bit about this but to be honest, I really can’t feel much of a difference between the dual firmness, so this is a nice feature if it matters to you, and I did make my purchase with it in mind, but if I had to go back again, it wouldn’t be a requirement.
  • Had to fit tightly in the crib. I’ve heard of too many accidents where baby wedged down between to the crib and the mattress. No cheap substandard product was going to be put into my crib. I wanted one with a guarantee size to fit in my crib.
  • Organic and free from any fire retardant chemicals which is what I have heard so much about with the off-gassing in mattresses. This was a requirement.
  • For my own budget it needed to be under $300.

Naturepedic Organic Crib MattressThe first mattress I set my heart on was the Naturepedic No Compromise Organic Cotton Ultra 252 Seamless Dual Firmness Crib Mattress. It had met all my requirements except the price tag (almost $400). This was a fantastic mattress but I knew there had to be an alternative to meet my price objective. That’s when I found the Naturepedic No Compromise Organic Cotton Classic Lightweight Dual Firmness Crib Mattress.

On top of meeting all the requirements I had originally set forth for myself, this mattress also featured a seamless design which I had never considered. What’s so special about seamless designs?┬áThe sealed waterproof seams prevent moisture penetration into the mattress which is more hygienic and keep dust mites and bed bugs from living in the seams. Also, having owned this mattress for a bit of time now, cleaning without the seams is so much easier than other crib mattresses.

I ordered this mattress from Amazon and because I have free shipping due to being a prime member I paid $289 for the mattress delivered. My checkbook was happy I stayed in budget!

I personally didn’t opt for any mattress pads or covers because the mattress itself is waterproof and I can easily clean it with a damp cloth and basic cleaning solutions. However, if you would like some protection they offer a simple organic flat crib pad that goes right on top of the mattress or you can go with a fitted mattress pad.

How is this mattress performing today? Beautifully! My daughter sleeps on it every night and sleeps quite comfortably and soundly. While the studies are still inconclusive about off-gassing, it gives me the peace of mind knowing I am doing the very best for my daughter.

Best Organic Portacrib Pad

Naturepedic Portacrib Mattress

You might be asking yourself why you should invest in an organic portacrib mattress when the one it comes with is perfectly fine. If you are using your portacrib only as a place for baby to play during the day then you may not need one but if your baby will be sleeping in your portacrib, then organic might be the right choice for you.

As an already convinced Naturepedic mom, I was already sold on the Naturepedic Organic Cotton Portacrib Mattress but how does it stand up?

We own a Graco portacrib and I knew immediately with the horrible chemical smell that came from the box that I would be ditching the included pad and replacing it with a Naturepedic. The pad fit well in the portacrib and definitely felt more comfortable than the included pad from the portacrib.

Like the crib mattress, the portacrib pad is made from organic cotton fabric and is waterproof making it really easy to keep clean.

For obvious safety reasons, because this is a 2″ pad and not a full thick mattress, you don’t want to use standard crib sheets on this portacrib pad. They can come unattached and bunch up around baby so it’s best to stick with their optional portacrib sheets that fit snuggly around the pad.

Best Organic Cradle Pads

While I didn’t use a cradle with my own children, I did want to provide some information for those of you may be using a cradle for your baby. If you want to have the same organic cotton, chemical free materials and waterproof surface that you chose in your organic crib mattress, then the Naturepedic Organic Cradle Pad is the way to go.
